New Scraffito Patterns

Back in 2013 we introduced our Scraffito series. Inspired by an ancient technique where the surface layer is scratched away to reveal a contrasting color, these designs have a wonderful hand drawn quality to them which is rarely seen in ceramics. Over the last two years the Scraffito series met with great success and continued popularity so we are pleased to announce that we have added four new designs to the series.

Scraffito E 5x10        SC-510E
Scraffito F  5x10         SC-510F
Scraffito G  5x10        SC-510G
Scraffito H  5x10          SC-510H
These new designs are available in a 5x10.  Some of these patterns are directional so be sure to pay extra attention when you are installing them!
Scraffito E in W88
They can be ordered in a single color (Monochrome) using any one of our hundreds of glaze colors. The Watercolor glazes really show off the new patterns. The glaze pools in the recesses of the pattern and it becomes darker where it gathers.
Scraffito F in C58
The Craftsman Glazes are a little more subtle, filling in the pattern here and there, creating different looks depending on the glaze. It's a good idea to order samples to see how the color you're considering reads on the pattern.
C609 Scraffito G
The Craftsman Metallic glaze C609 bounces the light off of it's metallic surface, allowing the pattern to read in the subtle shine.
R350 Scraffito H
Many R-glaze colors will pool in the patterns too, creating areas of light and dark to help the patterns read. Each color has its own look so it's important to order a sample.

You can also order the Scraffito series in Polywash, a two color process. This technique adds an accent color to the pattern. You choose both an overglaze color and an accent color There are eight accent colors you can use for Polywash shown on the tool board below.
PW 1 Polywash palette
The accent color is applied and then rubbed away leaving the accent color only in the recesses.

The overglaze is sprayed on top of the accent color, adding a layer of transparent color. You can use any of the Watercolor glazes as an overglaze, just keep in mind the darker glazes will obscure the accent colors and the more contrast between your accent color and your overglaze color the bolder the pattern will be. The three pieces below show Scraffito pattern F using different combinations of Polywash accent colors and overglazes.

PW60 with Indigo
PW79 with Mushroom
There are lots of looks you can create with these new designs. Check out our website for more ideas and information about these great new designs or if you're in Portland come by our showroom to see for yourself!

Indigo, Navy, Midnight. Blue by any other name.

A few years back i wrote a blog about all the deep dark blues that were turning up on my favorite design sites. Two years later and the deep dark blues are still going strong and i thought this topic was worth another visit.
Here's an update to that original post.

Indigo, Midnight, Navy.  These beautiful dark blues have been appearing in all my favorite design sites and magazines lately.  I've put together some pictures of these midnight beauties along with the Pratt & Larson tile they inspired me to order up in our own collection of deep blue glazes.

Filigree C in  W96
The soft texture of this rich navy blue painted wallpaper lead me to try our Filigree patterns in a deep blue Watercolor glaze. It gathers and pools in the recesses becoming deep and dark and pulls away from the delicate pattern, leaving it with a hint of the palest of blues.

Indigo Diamond wallpaper from Galbraith and Paul
Scraffito C in PW1 with Charcoal
The strong contrasting pattern of this Galbraith & Paul wallpaper has a similar feeling to our Scraffito Series. Here we've highlighted the pattern of the tile by applying an accent color with a technique called PolyWash.

Carpet squares from Flor

P&L's 2x6 Herringbone in R147 (glossy) and C340 (matte)
For a quieter look like the subtle stripes of these carpet tiles from Flor try a tone on tone pattern. Here I used a glossy glaze and a matte glaze in very similar colors to create a subtle herringbone chevron pattern suitable for use on the floor.

Kitchen design by Miles Redd
6x12 Field in R147
Texture A in W10
Texture B in W11
Maybe you'd like the whole room in that beautiful deep sea blue? Use our field tile to fill your walls with dramatic color. We can make sizes as large as 6x18! Add one of our new Textures to your field tile for a one of a kind look.

From Martha Stewart Living
Can't decide which blue to use? Pick a blend and use them in one of our mosaic patterns. There are almost 100 different mosaic patterns available from Pratt & Larson and they can be ordered in any combination of our beautiful blue glazes. Find the right blue for your next project at a Pratt & Larson dealer near you.

Follow the links in this post for downloadable brochures on each of these lines from P&L.

Introducing Scraffito

Inspired by an ancient technique where the surface layer is scratched to reveal a contrasting color, the Scraffito collection was created by Michael Pratt in celebration of our 30th anniversary. Using an etching process to explore the Scraffito technique, Michael created patterns with wide ranging influences from medieval Europe to Arabic geometry. The designs all have a wonderful hand drawn quality to them which is rarely seen in ceramics, and they are continuous to create large fields of beautiful pattern. A brochure is available on our website to download.

There are 4 patterns available in the new line; each comes in an 8x8 and a 5x10 format:

The Scraffito series can be ordered in any of our glazes. They all work beautifully - the opaque glazes create a more subtle pattern and the translucent Watercolor glazes pool in the recesses which brings out the design.

You can also use our new hand painting technique - Polywash to add an accent color and really bring out the patterns:

Scraffito pattern B in PW1 with Golden accent
There are 8 accent colors carefully formulated for Polywash. Each accent color has a name. The palette below shows the accent colors under W1 Watercolor glaze.

The accent color is applied and then rubbed away leaving the accent color only in the recesses. The over glaze color is sprayed over the top, adding a layer of transparent color. You can use the 8 accent colors under any of the Watercolor glazes, just keep in mind the darker glazes will obscure the accent colors and the more contrast between your accent color and your over glaze color the bolder the pattern will appear. Hereare some new concept boards showing different ways of using this versatile new line. We can't wait to see how you use it in your next projects!

Update: Concept Studio sent us these pictures of the  beautiful Scraffito installation in their Costa Mesa showroom.  We just had to share them!

New Displays in the Pratt & Larson Showroom

We've been doing some rearranging in the showroom and there's lots of new products, displays and work areas. Scraffito is a brand new line which will be officially released soon but you can have a sneak preview in our Portland showroom. We installed a beautiful new floor pad and there are 12 new concept boards to showcase it. I'll blog all about it when it's officially released.

There is a new Pratt & Larson color wall with our glazes shown on 2x4's and organized by glaze family. It's next to the new work table and hangs over the credenza with all the parts and pieces so everything is close at hand while you're designing.

All of the tool boards have been rehung. I think the gray wall helps to make the pieces easier to see.
The Intaglio display has been rearranged too and there are 6 new display boards.
