Contemporary Craftsman

We've been updating our Craftsman glaze display boards. Focused more on showing off the beautiful fields of color offered in our Craftsman glaze line the boards have a more contemporary, streamlined look. While they're perfect for a Craftsman bungalow update or a modern cabin retreat these beautiful glazes add a rich varied field of color to projects of any style.

Street of Dreams 2012

We are very excited to be featured in the 2012 Street of Dreams at The Vineyard in West Linn. Pratt & Larson is showcased in several rooms in the Calistoga, designed and built by Pahlisch Homes. The interior finishes and furniture were all chosen by  Ronda Divers Interiors and the house is absolutely stunning.

The kitchen uses the Pratt & Larson Hexagon Pattern #2 in a beautiful assortment of neutral creamy colors.

The mosaic pattern is used through out the kitchen, tying the many work areas together.

The Jack and Jill bathroom uses Pratt & Larson Mosaic Pattern #25 in a wonderful combination of Craftsman glazes creating a rich warm rug on the floor. The mosaics are framed with a soft golden border using a custom 5x5 size that repeats on the vanity top as well as in the tub surround.

The Mosaic Pattern #25 appears again in the tub surround, this time as a border. The 5x5 field tile shows the rich variation that makes our Craftsman glazes so beautiful and unique.

The tile for the kitchen and the Jack and Jill bathroom was manufactured by Pratt & Larson Ceramics, right here in Portland, OR.  The Master Bath uses a beautiful hexagon tile from Seneca Tile based in Ohio, and available in Portland through the Pratt & Larson tile showroom.

All the homes at the Street of Dreams look spectacular this year (as always!) so be sure to check it out.  The show is open until August 26th, and it's certainly worth a visit  for some great design inspiration. Special thanks to interior designer Joelle Jarvis from Ronda Divers Interiors  for choosing Pratt and Larson Ceramics for this wonderful home.

Our Newest Vignette

Our new Craftsman Vignette is complete!

At the top is Cascade Blend # 1, our tile and stone mosaic series, and Intaglio pattern A 3x8 in C203 which has a lovely soft texture.

Here's a close up:

From there it switches to a warm Bas-Relief pinecone in C92 with C205 for the counter and trim.

 Here's a close up of the Bas-Relief:

It's anchored with a great base cabinet of C70 Wall Relief and a beautiful DW52 hand painted pinecone border.

The pinecone decorative relief border is hand painted in Duochrome for a tone on tone effect.

As always it's even better in person, so stop by the showroom to see for yourself!

Tile for Your Craftsman Home

Portland is full of fabulous craftsman bungalows. Big porches and fireplaces are a major plus in a town where it's always raining. Over the years many of them have had all their trim stripped away, their tile fireplaces coated in thick paint. So how to remodel?  Do you stick with "period appropriate"? Do you strip all that heavily painted trim and try to find the original wood? Do you rip it all out and go contemporary? Maybe there's a happy middle ground?

If you're thinking about a remodel here's a few tile ideas that cover traditional craftsman choices to fresh new looks with a craftsman flavor. Come visit our showroom, we're sure to have the right look for your Craftsman project, whether or not you decide to strip all that woodwork.

Concept boards in a craftsman tradition by Pratt & Larson

At Pratt and Larson we got our start making craftsman tile.  Over time we've branched out and added more contemporary looks as well. Lately we've updated some of our hand painted craftsman tile with a new contemporary tone on tone look we're calling Duochrome shown above in the pine cones and fir trees. Mix and match the pieces to create a balance of new and old.

Craftsman Design and Renovation a Portland based company that specializes in old home restoration and remodels, reproduced the original counter and back splash of this kitchen while updating to allow for modern appliances. Using a vintage reproduction tile line called Revival they were able to match the original very closely. Visit their website to see some great before and after pictures.

Motawi Tileworks makes beautiful tile in the Arts and Crafts tradition.  Inspired by potteries such as Pewabic and Rookwood and by great architects of the era like Ernest Batchelder, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright they create tile with a look that's all their own.

This kitchen remodel also by Craftsman Design and Renovation uses Pratt and Larson field tile combined with a  leaf mural and a geometric border by Metolius Ridge Tile. Mixing the styles strikes a balance between the traditional craftsman glass fronted cabinets and the modern stainless appliances, tying everything together.

Batchelder and Claycraft were two California potteries making Arts and Crafts tile in the 1920's. Their tile is commonly found in Portland homes and often damaged or painted over so many times you'd hardly know there was an image. Luckily, Tile Restoration Center in Seattle, WA specializes in recreating the tiles from these companies as well as creating designs of their own.
